SUMMARY:Report of Back-to-School Students Program\, October 2024 edition
DESCRIPTION:Theme: BUILDING DIPLOMACY AND YOUTHS ENGAGEMENT IN\nSOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT\nTopic: DIPLOMACY IS A MYTH IN AFRICA THAT CAN NEVER BECOME A\nREALITY\nExchange on diplomacy\, teaching its history\, evolution\, and application in the real world characterized this October 2024 edition of the Baseline back to school debate at Mboa hub with young secondary school and university students. At exactly 10 am that Saturday\, October 19th\, we started with a word of welcome from the moderator and coordinator of the day\, Miss Ethel LEHDUFE\, Vice President in charge of programs and projects at Baseline Orators Network (BON). After this\, we had a detailed breakdown of how\ndiplomacy discussions started and how it evolved to become a matter of international relations\, which was led by Mr. Joseph LAMBE\, Vice President in charge of administrative affairs at BON. We had a series of question-and-answer sessions where the attendees sought\nto understand the concept of diplomacy\, especially its use in Africa before we proceeded to the second part of the session\, a diplomatic debate using the rules of the UN diplomacy debate module.\nThe debate started with a 15-minute reflection on the topic given by the attendees to decide if they wanted to be for the motion or against the motion. After the sides were chosen\, we divided the group into two teams: those in support of the topic and those who\nheld a different opinion. The various groups proceeded to a 30-minute preparation of their arguments and chose two representatives each to present the arguments from both sides. The aim was to try convincing each party and getting to an agreeable conclusion for both parties. The debate started after a short coffee break\, with both sides of the debate giving good arguments to support their claims\, making it a very heated and interesting debate. After the debate was ended\, the moderator guided the parties into agreeing on one thing to take as a solution. \nWe then took photos and networked. We departed at 3 pm\, filled with the spirit of diplomacy and ready to engage in more diplomatic conversations.

SUMMARY:REPORT OF BASELINE ORATORS NETWORK BACK TO SCHOOL DEBATE AND PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION (Yaoundé edition)
DESCRIPTION:Following the successful Back-to-School Debate and Public Speaking event in Limbe this August\, the spotlight shifted to Yaoundé in September. The BON organized the competition on September 21\, 2024\, at Mboa Hub Yaoundé. It brought together 16 exceptional students from high schools and universities across Yaoundé to compete for the monthly mini prize and\, more importantly\, to enhance their critical thinking\, debating\, and public speaking skills.\nIn preparation for the competition\, a series of online preparatory classes were held via Google Meet and WhatsApp. The day commenced at 8 AM with briefings on public speaking and self-introduction. Participants were assigned team names and debate rooms\, inspired by\nprominent towns in Cameroon\, including Team Yaoundé\, Douala\, Ebolowa\, Buea\, Maroua\, and Bertoua. \nPublic Speaking Round One\nThe event began with the first round of public speaking\, a knockout round featuring prepared speeches in three public speaking rooms. The top four speakers from each room advanced to the public speaking finals. \n \nDEBATE ROUND ONE\nMotion: This House Believes That Schools Should Empower Students to Choose Their Own Learning Paths. The first round of the debate featured prepared motions in three debate rooms. In each room\, the two best speakers qualified for the finals. After each round\, the jury provided feedback on the participants’ performances and offered recommendations for improvement. Participants then enjoyed a short break with light refreshments to catch their breath. \nPUBLIC SPEAKING FINALS\nA total of 12 participants qualified for the public speaking finals\, where they competed to be crowned the champion of the September edition. This round featured impromptu speeches\, showcasing the remarkable improvement and heightened performance of the participants following the lessons and feedback from the jury after the first round. The public speaking finals were highly competitive and intense\, but ultimately\, only one participant emerged as the champion for this edition. \n \nDEBATE FINALS\nA total of six participants qualified for the debate finals\, where they showcased their critical thinking abilities in an impromptu debate. While the participants gave their best efforts\, there is still room for improvement to compete and win major tournaments. At the end of the debate finals\, the jury provided extensive feedback\, lessons\, and strategies to help participants refine their skills and correct their mistakes. \nAwards and Closing Remarks\nThe winners of the public speaking and debate competitions were announced and awarded their prizes. The remaining participants were encouraged to remain resilient\, continue learning\, and improve their strategies\, as many more competitions are on the horizon. Overall\, the BON Back-to-School Public Speaking and Debate Yaoundé edition was a success. The day concluded with closing remarks\, feedback sharing\, networking\, and group photos.
